Fiji’s diving industry is set to gain a significant boost with the introduction of a hyperbaric chamber at the Pacific Specialist Healthcare Services (PSH) in Nadi. This new facility will provide essential medical treatment for those experiencing decompression sickness, as highlighted by Republic of Fiji Navy commander, Commodore Humphrey Tawake.
The existing hyperbaric chamber at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva has been instrumental in supporting Navy diving operations in Fiji’s eastern and central divisions. With the addition of the Nadi chamber, Navy divers will now have greater flexibility and enhanced support for operations in the Western Division, which is crucial for their diving training and activities.
Commodore Tawake expressed his satisfaction, noting that the hyperbaric chamber is now in the care of a well-equipped, modern healthcare provider, which is expected to greatly benefit both the Navy and the wider community. He highlighted that the strategic location of PSH Hospital makes it ideally suited for rapid response to any hyperbaric treatment needs, particularly given the focus on the Navy’s enhanced maritime capability in the country.
The establishment of this facility also aligns with Fiji’s broader goals of boosting tourism and improving service availability for visitors. Commodore Tawake emphasized that having a hyperbaric chamber available in Nadi strengthens the confidence of tourist operators, knowing that medical assistance is readily accessible during diving activities. This advancement not only enhances safety for divers but also supports the local economy, given the significance of tourism in the region.
Overall, the collaboration between the Fijian Navy and PSH represents a positive step towards improving marine safety standards, enhancing medical support for divers, and fostering economic growth through tourism.
