The People’s Alliance party (PA) National Legal and Disciplinary Sub-Committee is scheduled to meet today to discuss the situation involving Lynda Tabuya, the former deputy party leader. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed Ms. Tabuya on Thursday after a video of her dancing became public on social media over Christmas Eve.

Ms. Tabuya has acknowledged that the video is genuine and stated that it was meant for her husband, Robert Semaan. However, it’s important to note that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption found that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Semaan was legally dissolved in December 2016.

In an update regarding the situation, Mr. Rabuka will be joining the meeting virtually from Savusavu to provide insights on the decision-making process that resulted in Ms. Tabuya’s dismissal. Ms. Tabuya remains a prominent figure within the party, having received 11,965 votes, making her the fourth highest in the 2022 General Election.

The disciplinary process was initiated by Mr. Rabuka following multiple complaints received by the PA concerning the explicit video. He stated that the committee has 21 days to consider and respond to the issue. The Prime Minister emphasized that his actions are grounded in constitutional authority.

This situation presents a challenge not only for Ms. Tabuya but also for the People’s Alliance party as they navigate the implications of the incident. However, there lies an opportunity for the party to demonstrate unity and to reaffirm their commitment to addressing issues transparently and responsibly.

In summary, the meeting today holds significant importance for the PA, as it will outline the party’s stance on accountability and governance, underscoring the significance of maintaining integrity in political leadership.
