A new book focusing on the experiences of Indians in Fiji will be introduced at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Odisha, India. Titled “Fiji Mein Bhartiyon Ka Itihas Tatha Unka Jeevan (1879 – 1947)” (The Life and History of Indians in Fiji), the book is authored by distinguished writer and academic Dr. Rekha Chaturvedi.

Dr. Chaturvedi describes her work as a comprehensive examination of the lives and struggles of indentured laborers from India, known as “Girmitiyas.” The book sheds light on the often painful and difficult realities faced by these workers under British colonial rule. The subjects of her book include the challenging conditions they endured in various countries, including Fiji, which reflects a broader history of exploitation experienced by the Indian diaspora in regions like South Africa, Mauritius, Trinidad, and Guyana.

Through her publication, Dr. Chaturvedi aims to acknowledge the sacrifices of these individuals and ensure that their stories are preserved for future generations. Her work serves as a reminder of the resilience and contributions of the Indian community in Fiji and beyond, promoting a deeper understanding of their historical context.

This endeavor not only contributes to academic discourse but also honors the legacies of those who faced significant hardships, emphasizing their importance in shaping the cultural and historical narrative of the regions they settled in.

In a positive light, this book launch at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas highlights a commitment to recognizing and celebrating the history of Indians abroad, fostering a sense of pride and continuity within the diaspora. It encourages dialogue and remembrance, ensuring that the struggles and achievements of these communities are not forgotten.
