The Public Service Disciplinary Tribunal has declined to reinstate the salary of Atelaite Rokosuka, the suspended permanent secretary for Fisheries and Forestry, who earned $199,000 annually. Ms. Rokosuka faced two misconduct charges for not adhering to legal advice from the Solicitor-General’s Office, failing to properly consult relevant ministries, and bypassing due process when she negotiated an agreement with Infinite Power Clean Energy (Fiji) Pte Ltd on behalf of the government.

Her case was forwarded to the tribunal after the alleged misconduct, leading to her salary suspension on October 15, 2024. In a bid to have her salary reinstated, Ms. Rokosuka submitted a request to the tribunal on November 7, highlighting her financial obligations and presenting a statement showing her loan commitments. However, the tribunal members—Anare Tuilevuka, Deepika Prakash, and Jeremaia Savou—expressed concerns about the nature of these loans, questioning whether they were for a home, a vehicle, or another purpose.

Furthermore, the tribunal noted that Ms. Rokosuka had not provided adequate information regarding her personal circumstances, aside from indicating that she is a mother of two children. They pointed out the absence of details regarding any alternative sources of income or support from family members. Given the seriousness of the allegations against her, the tribunal emphasized the high level of accountability expected from someone in her position, referencing section 127 of the Constitution.

This decision reflects the tribunal’s commitment to upholding standards of accountability and integrity within the public service. Although the outcome may be challenging for Ms. Rokosuka, it serves as a reminder of the importance of due process and legal compliance in government roles.

Overall, the situation highlights the significant responsibilities that come with public office and the need for officials to act judiciously. Moving forward, it may provide an opportunity for Ms. Rokosuka and others to reflect on their duties and ensure that such incidents are avoided in the future.
