The former Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, is set to receive a decision regarding her status within the People’s Alliance (PA) party in the next 21 days. This announcement follows a meeting of the party’s executive committee at their headquarters in Suva, where the process for her disciplinary hearing was finalized.

This marks Ms. Tabuya’s second disciplinary review within the party. Earlier this year, in February, she faced scrutiny due to allegations involving a scandal with another minister, which resulted in her being removed as the deputy leader of the party. The PA described the allegations at the time as having caused “potentially irreparable damage” to its reputation.

Currently, Ms. Tabuya is dealing with repercussions from a leaked explicit video that surfaced on Christmas Eve, in which she is seen dancing nude. She has confirmed the video’s authenticity, asserting it was meant for her ex-husband, Robert Semaan, from whom she divorced in 2016 according to investigations by FICAC.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed her from her ministerial position just two days after the video’s leak. Mr. Rabuka attended the recent executive committee meeting virtually from Savusavu.

The PA’s general secretary, Sila Balawa, stated that the disciplinary process will follow the party’s constitution, aiming to maintain independence and the integrity of the proceedings. Ms. Tabuya will be afforded a chance to present her side of the story during the review.

While the members of the current disciplinary committee remain undisclosed, previous members included notable figures such as Minister for Lands Filimoni Vosarogo, alongside others.

This situation highlights the importance of accountability and integrity within political parties, as they navigate internal challenges while fostering a culture of transparency.

In summary, Lynda Tabuya’s disciplinary hearing reflects a significant moment for the People’s Alliance as it seeks to uphold its values amidst controversy. The outcome may serve as a pivotal point for both Ms. Tabuya and the party moving forward.
