The People’s Alliance party (PA) is set to meet today for a session of its National Legal and Disciplinary Sub-Committee, focusing on the recent controversy surrounding former deputy leader Lynda Tabuya after an explicit video of her dancing circulated on social media on Christmas Eve. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed Ms. Tabuya from her position on Thursday, following the video’s release.

Ms. Tabuya has confirmed that the video is genuine and claims it was intended for her husband, Robert Semaan. However, it’s important to note that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption revealed earlier this year that Ms. Tabuya and Mr. Semaan’s marriage was legally ended in December 2016.

As part of the proceedings, Prime Minister Rabuka will participate in the committee meeting via Zoom from Savusavu, where he will discuss the reasons behind the dismissal of Ms. Tabuya, who was a significant political figure in the 2022 General Election, gaining 11,965 votes—making her the fourth highest among candidates.

This situation initiated a disciplinary hearing on Christmas Day, prompted by multiple complaints regarding the explicit video. The Prime Minister emphasized that the committee has a 21-day window to examine and conclude the matter.

While the events have led to serious discussions within the party, it is essential to consider the implications for accountability and ethical standards in politics. This incident serves as a reminder for political leaders to maintain a level of decorum and responsibility in their public and private lives.

As the situation unfolds, there is an opportunity for the People’s Alliance party to reassess its values and priorities, potentially emerging stronger and more united in their commitment to ethical governance.
