The first disaster management workshop for Blue Pacific Continents commenced their weeklong event yesterday morning at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Conference Centre.

Chief operating officer for World Vision South Asia Pacific regional office, Sarah Bearup, emphasized the significance of locally led initiatives in humanitarian and development work.

“We have nine countries represented, including some of our World Vision local staff as well as numerous local partners,” she stated.

“We’re really bringing a whole group together this week.”

Ms. Bearup added that the goal is to enhance the existing humanitarian ecosystem.

“Strengthening capacity, particularly in disaster management, means building up skills and tools necessary to respond to disasters.

“Whether it’s preparedness, mitigation, addressing environmental impacts, ensuring the rights of people during disasters, or providing dignified and effective responses,” she added.

The workshop will last for five days.
