More than 90 percent of residents in senior citizen homes across Fiji are living with some form of disability, as highlighted by Assistant Minister for Women and Children, Sashi Kiran, during an event commemorating the International Day for Persons with Disabilities in Suva. Ms. Kiran addressed the troubling reality that many individuals with disabilities face rejection from their families and lack essential support systems.

She connected this issue to the ongoing 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women, emphasizing the heightened vulnerability of persons with disabilities to various forms of abuse and their restricted access to reporting mechanisms and support services. However, Ms. Kiran expressed optimism about the collective efforts needed to ensure that individuals with disabilities can live with dignity and reach their full potential.

She stressed the importance of empowering people with disabilities by elevating their voices and involving them in leadership roles. Their unique lived experiences are crucial for developing inclusive and equitable strategies for the future.

This situation sheds light on the significant need for greater support and inclusion for disabled individuals in society. By recognizing their challenges and actively working to elevate their voices, Fiji can foster a more inclusive environment that benefits everyone. The push for collective action can lead to meaningful change, ensuring that people with disabilities are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.
