China is eager to establish direct flights between the Chinese mainland and Fiji “as soon as possible,” according to Zhou Jian, China’s ambassador to Fiji. During an event in Suva marking the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, Ambassador Zhou expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Fijian authorities to facilitate these flights.
He emphasized that the introduction of direct flights would attract more Chinese tourists to Fiji, which would positively impact the local economy. Ambassador Zhou also encouraged Fijians to visit China to experience the country’s offerings.
In his address, Zhou highlighted the importance of cooperation in strengthening Fiji-China relations, linking the call for direct flights to broader goals of fostering people-to-people exchanges. He stated that building goodwill among citizens is essential for strong diplomatic ties.
Zhou reaffirmed China’s commitment to cultural exchange initiatives, including sending art troupes and medical teams, along with offering Chinese Government Scholarships to enhance mutual understanding between the two nations.
Efforts to increase Fiji’s profile as a tourist destination in China are ongoing, and last year, Tourism Fiji, Fiji Airways, and Trip.com Group signed a three-year strategic Memorandum of Understanding to boost Fiji’s visibility in the Greater China market. Currently, Fiji Airways operates flights to China through a codeshare agreement with Hong Kong Airlines.
