China’s ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, expressed the desire for direct flights between the Chinese mainland and Fiji to be established “as soon as possible.” He made this statement during a recent event in Suva, marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Ambassador Zhou emphasized that China is prepared to collaborate with Fiji to initiate these direct flights promptly, which he believes would attract more Chinese tourists, thereby boosting Fiji’s economy. He also extended an invitation for Fijians to visit China and experience its diverse offerings.

During his address, Zhou highlighted the importance of fostering cooperation to strengthen the friendship between Fiji and China. He noted that the push for direct flights is part of a broader strategy to enhance people-to-people exchanges, stating that “Amity between the people holds the key to sound state-to-state relations.”

Furthermore, he announced China’s commitment to continue sending cultural representatives, medical teams, and providing scholarships to support cultural exchanges and enhance mutual understanding between the two nations.

Efforts to raise Fiji’s profile as a tourist destination in China are ongoing, with significant partners working together. Last year, Tourism Fiji, Fiji Airways, and Trip.com Group entered into a three-year strategic agreement to increase Fiji’s visibility in the Greater China market and promote the island’s tourism slogan ‘Where Happiness Comes Naturally.’

At present, Fiji Airways operates flights to China through a codeshare agreement with Hong Kong Airlines.
