Diplomatic Ties Strengthened: Fiji’s Ambassador Embarks on New Mission in Nauru

William Toganivalu, Fiji’s traveling ambassador to the Pacific Island Countries and Territories, presented his letter of credentials to His Excellency David Adeang, the president of the Republic of Nauru, officially recognizing him as Fiji’s non-resident high commissioner to Nauru.

Ambassador Toganivalu received a formal welcome, including a customary Guard of Honour from the Nauru Police Force. During their meeting, he expressed appreciation to President Adeang for the warm reception and highlighted the enduring friendship and cooperation between Fiji and Nauru, grounded in shared cultural values and a commitment to regional prosperity and development.

President Adeang emphasized Nauru’s commitment to collaborating with Fiji to enhance bilateral relations and to jointly navigate the opportunities and challenges within the Pacific region. He also recalled a previous meeting with Fiji’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister, Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, where he reaffirmed Nauru’s support for the Ocean of Peace initiative aimed at fostering stability and peace in the Pacific.

Following the presentation of his credentials, Ambassador Toganivalu made courtesy visits to several Nauruan ministers, including Reagan Winson Aliklik, Minister of Transport; Charmaine Scotty, Minister of Health and Medical Services; Darrina Kun, Secretary of Education; and Lionel Rouwen Aingimea, Former President and current Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Justice, and Border Control.

Additionally, he was welcomed by the Fijian community in Nauru before holding a Talanoa session, where attendees expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to inquire about immigration services, work contracts, and other key issues.

Ambassador Toganivalu also discussed innovative approaches by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Fiji to engage with the Fijian diaspora, including a newly updated website that features a portal for diaspora members to register their contact information. He noted that this enhancement will improve the Ministry’s response in emergencies and assist overseas Fiji Missions in gathering information on the Fijian diaspora.

Moreover, Ambassador Toganivalu thanked the Fijian diaspora for their contributions to the economies of both Nauru and Fiji, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage and maintaining strong connections to one’s homeland.
