The quality of food and adherence to safety standards are critical factors influencing consumer choices in restaurants along the Suva to Nausori corridor. Recent interviews with 20 diverse individuals in these areas reveal significant insights into dining preferences and the priorities of diners.

The survey included nine questions that explored the variety of dining options available, customer satisfaction levels, past dining experiences, and the essential aspect of receiving value for money. The responses indicated a common sentiment: customers often feel they are not getting adequate value for the prices they pay, primarily due to concerns surrounding food quality and safety practices.

Aarti Mala, a library manager, shared her frustrations, stating, “I hardly get my money’s worth… I expect food services to comply with the Food Safety Act 2003.” Respondents noted that rising prices, along with the need for quality and cleanliness, heavily influence their dining decisions, despite the ongoing inflation affecting their budgets.

Most consumers prioritize quality over quantity, especially as they increasingly replace homemade meals with dining out. Amanisi Hali, a 24-year-old civil servant, emphasized this point, stating, “Quality matters, especially for our health.”

While consumers remain vigilant about food safety, the survey found that negative dining experiences leave lasting impressions. Many respondents recounted instances of having to return subpar meals due to poor hygiene or improper food handling practices.

The Consumer Council of Fiji has reported numerous food safety complaints against local establishments, highlighting common issues like inadequate hygiene and substandard food quality. In the past six months, the council has recorded 26 cases with a total value of approximately $276.35.

Seema Shandil, the chief executive officer of the Consumer Council, stressed the importance of adhering to health and safety regulations, stating their commitment to investigating complaints and ensuring businesses adhere to standards. Regular inspections and partnerships with health authorities are part of their proactive approach to maintaining food safety.

The Ministry of Health plays a vital role in enforcing food safety standards in Fiji. Recent reports indicate that 11 food establishments have faced prosecution this year for various violations. The Ministry emphasizes the necessity for compliance with the Food Safety Act 2003 to ensure consumer health and well-being.

Overall, the feedback from consumers encourages restaurant owners to prioritize food safety and quality to meet the expectations of their patrons. As health officials continue to advocate for strict adherence to regulations, there is a renewed hope that food establishments will focus on enhancing the overall dining experience while ensuring the safety and satisfaction of their customers.
