Food safety and restaurant standards significantly impact consumers’ choices in the Suva to Nausori corridor. A survey conducted with 20 individuals of varying backgrounds aimed to uncover the key factors influencing their dining decisions, including restaurant selections and meal options.
The survey revealed that nearly all respondents valued getting their money’s worth, with many expressing dissatisfaction due to poor food quality and inadequate food handling practices. Aarti Mala, a library manager, articulated her frustrations, explaining how rising costs are affecting consumers while implying a need for food establishments to comply with the Food Safety Act of 2003.
Despite economic challenges, many participants reported eating out nearly every day, driven largely by working professionals seeking convenience. However, participants noted that they remain discerning, carefully considering the menu, food quality, and the overall cleanliness of establishments before making a purchase.
One respondent emphasized the importance of restaurant hygiene, recounting how she has left establishments that did not meet her cleanliness standards. This demonstrates a proactive attitude among consumers regarding food safety.
Among the negative experiences, a notable number of respondents had to return meals due to staff negligence, such as not wearing appropriate safety gear or serving food prepared with old oil. Approximately 20% indicated they had returned unsatisfactory meals, with only one person mentioning they considered lodging a formal complaint.
Seema Shandil, CEO of the Consumer Council of Fiji, noted that complaints about food safety are common in Suva, with 26 cases amounting to $276.35 registered in the past six months, primarily revolving around hygiene issues and substandard food quality that pose significant health risks.
The council actively collaborates with various authorities to ensure compliance with food safety regulations. They emphasize accountability and corrective measures for businesses failing to meet standards.
Efforts from the Ministry of Health are also crucial, as they enforce compliance with food safety laws, issuing prosecutions against non-compliant establishments and highlighting the importance of consumer safety.
