The safety and quality of food served at restaurants in the Suva to Nausori corridor have become increasingly important to consumers, influencing their dining decisions significantly. A recent survey involving 20 individuals from various backgrounds revealed that many prioritize getting value for their money when choosing where to eat. Despite rising costs due to inflation, most participants reported dining out frequently, particularly for lunch.
Concerns about food safety emerged as a primary issue, with respondents emphasizing the need for quality over quantity and cleanliness as key factors in their selection of dining establishments. Additionally, experiences of poor food quality and unhygienic practices were not uncommon, leading some to return their meals or avoid certain restaurants altogether.
Seema Shandil, the Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Council of Fiji, highlighted that food safety complaints are regularly received, often focusing on poor hygiene practices and substandard food quality, raising significant health risks. With over 341 food-related complaints recorded in 2023, the council is actively collaborating with various health authorities to ensure adherence to food safety regulations and to hold businesses accountable for their practices.
The Ministry of Health is also involved in enforcing compliance with food safety standards and has prosecuted multiple establishments this year for violations. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu has called on business owners to prioritize consumer safety, especially as Fiji’s food safety regulations play a vital role in protecting the public.
As consumers continue to demand better quality and safety in their dining experiences, it is hopeful that ongoing inspections and regulatory enforcement will lead to improved standards in the food service industry. Establishments that focus on hygiene and food quality will not only meet consumer expectations but can also foster a loyal customer base.
In summary, the findings underline the growing importance of food safety and quality in consumer decisions, signaling a clear message to restaurant owners about the necessity of compliance with health regulations to maintain trust and satisfaction among their clientele.
