Eseta Nadakuitavuki, the Permanent Secretary for Information, has expressed her dismay over the growing trend of anonymous social media users who utilize fake accounts to propagate rumors and engage in personal attacks online. During a Digital Media Literacy Training event, she highlighted the escalating toxicity in online discussions, where many abandon factual discourse in favor of personal insults.

Nadakuitavuki pointed to the recent backlash surrounding the Miss Fiji pageant as particularly troubling, noting how swiftly the public conversation devolved from the initial topic to damaging personal critiques. She mentioned Ana Tuiketei, one of the individuals targeted, and emphasized that even public figures, who may seem resilient, are still human and can be deeply affected by such negativity.

“I said you know she is a big girl she can handle it, but she’s only human. There are times that, you know, it can break her. So I actually took her out for lunch and then we just had a good chit chat, just checking on her. I think that’s probably our role now, just to check when they are put on the spotlight,” Nadakuitavuki said, reflecting on the importance of support among peers.

She cautioned that many internet users tend to comment without fully understanding the issues, further spreading misinformation and inflicting emotional distress on others. Nadakuitavuki advocated for a broader definition of digital literacy, stressing that it should encompass critical thinking before sharing content, verifying facts, and recognizing that freedom of expression carries a weight of responsibility.

Furthermore, Nadakuitavuki highlighted the importance of respecting the rights and dignity of others in the online space. Her comments serve as a reminder that while social media can foster open communication, it is crucial that users engage thoughtfully and compassionately. This call for greater digital responsibility aims to cultivate a healthier online environment that not only encourages free expression but also safeguards the emotional well-being of individuals within the digital community.
