Digicel Junior Bula Boys Shine Despite Tough Semifinal Loss

Head Coach Marika Rodu of the Digicel Junior Bula Boys has commended his team for their effort in their narrow 1-0 defeat to New Zealand in the semifinals of the OFC U19 Men’s Championship in Apia, Samoa, yesterday.

Despite the loss, an emotional but proud Rodu said the performance met their expectations, though the outcome was not in their favor.

“We knew playing New Zealand in the semifinal would be challenging. Our strategy was to create our own opportunities and attack New Zealand from chaotic situations. I believe we excelled in creating chances and defending throughout the game.”

“They scored immediately after halftime, and unfortunately, we missed a penalty shortly after, preventing us from leveling the match despite numerous scoring opportunities.”

“It is what it is. All I can say is hats off to the boys. They gave a very, very good performance.”

Rodu noted that the players adhered to the game plan, demonstrating their courage and belief in their ability to compete against teams like New Zealand.

“I hope they view this performance as the beginning of a new chapter in their playing careers.”

“Personally, I enjoy playing against New Zealand because it takes me out of my comfort zone and makes me think about my coaching style and areas for improvement. Yesterday was a great moment for applying our football principles.”

“I believe a lapse in concentration led to the goal we conceded, but I embrace playing New Zealand as they are worthy opponents and a benchmark for Oceania region teams.”

“It’s been a great journey spending six weeks with the boys, who have worked incredibly hard to come this far.”

Rodu and his team will return to the field on Thursday to face the Solomon Islands in the third-place playoff.
