Digicel Fiji is celebrating its 16th anniversary by supporting community development with a generous donation of $16,000 distributed among three projects. This initiative focuses on enhancing the lives of residents in Mokani Village, Karoko Village, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama in Navosa-Nadroga, all of which are set to use the funds for important village projects.
This year marks a departure from the company’s traditional approach to community support. Rather than distributing funds uniformly across a larger number of projects, Digicel Fiji required communities to submit proposals for funding, which were evaluated based on established criteria. In the past, the company allocated over $50,000 to ten communities, providing each with $5,000. The adjustment this year aims to reflect the increasing costs associated with community projects.
According to Farid Mohammed, CEO of Digicel Fiji, the decision to divide the grant into three regional allocations was made to ensure equal support across the Central Eastern, Northern, and Western divisions of the country. The $16,000 awarded aligns with the company’s anniversary, marking a meaningful contribution to the communities they serve.
Joeli Vueti, an advisor from the Mokani Youth Club, expressed gratitude for the timely aid, describing it as an early Christmas gift for the community. The funds will address crucial needs, such as providing solar lights for students to study at night and ensuring safe travel for women attending markets early in the morning.
To ensure accountability and effectiveness, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the recipient villages to monitor the implementation and impact of the grants.
This initiative not only highlights Digicel Fiji’s commitment to fostering community development but also serves as a reminder of the positive impact that corporate contributions can have on grassroots projects. In an era where community support can significantly uplift lives, Digicel Fiji’s efforts exemplify how businesses can play an integral role in enhancing the welfare of the communities they are part of.
