To mark its 16th anniversary, Digicel Fiji has launched a special initiative, distributing $16,000 across three community projects. The recipients of this generous support include the Mokani Village Youth Club from Tailevu, the Karoko Village Youth Club from Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama for Navosa-Nadroga, focused on fostering village development.
This year, Digicel Fiji has adopted a unique approach compared to previous years. Communities were required to submit proposals through an application process, with selections made based on established criteria. In past initiatives, the company allocated over $50,000 among 10 communities, with each receiving $5,000. However, due to the increasing costs of project execution, Digicel opted for a more targeted approach this year.
Digicel Fiji’s CEO, Farid Mohammed, explained that this initiative reflects their commitment to supporting all regions in the country. The decision to distribute funds across three regions—the Central Eastern, Northern, and Western Divisions—ensures that all areas benefit from the initiative. The $16,000 total is a fitting tribute to the occasion of their 16th anniversary.
One of the beneficiaries, Joeli Vueti, advisor of the Mokani Youth Club, expressed gratitude for this initiative, describing it as an early Christmas gift for the residents of Mokani. The project aims to address critical community needs, providing solar lights for children to study at night and added safety for women traveling to market early in the morning.
To ensure effective utilization of the funds, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the participating villages regarding the expenditure of the grants.
