Digicel Fiji is celebrating 16 years of successful operations by distributing a total of $16,000 across three community projects as part of their 16th Birthday Initiative Program. The recipients include the Mokani Village Youth Club from Tailevu, the Karoko Village Youth Club from Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama for Navosa-Nadroga from the West. This initiative aims to support local village development.
This year, Digicel Fiji has adopted a different approach compared to prior years. Communities had to submit proposals through an application process, and funding was allocated based on specific criteria. Previously, the company had awarded over $50,000 to ten communities, with each receiving $5,000. However, due to escalating project costs, Digicel Fiji opted to provide a larger amount to fewer projects this time around.
According to Farid Mohammed, CEO of Digicel Fiji, this year’s initiative was structured to evenly benefit all regions across the country, highlighting their commitment to community support. The decision to allocate $16,000 was inspired by the milestone of their 16th anniversary.
Joeli Vueti, an advisor for the Mokani Youth Club, described the grant as an early Christmas present for their community. The project funded by the initiative will enable children to study with solar lights at night and ensure safe travel for women heading to the market early in the morning.
To ensure the effective use of the grants, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the three selected communities regarding the progress and impact of their projects.
This initiative not only reflects Digicel Fiji’s commitment to community development but also marks a meaningful investment in lighting up the lives of many, fostering both education and safety across the regions.
