Digicel Fiji is celebrating its 16th anniversary by launching a new initiative that supports local communities through a generous donation of $16,000 to three different projects. This commitment aims to foster village development across the nation.
The recipients of this initiative include the Mokani Village Youth Club from Tailevu, the Karoko Village Youth Club from Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama organization for Navosa-Nadroga in the West. Each community submitted proposals through a formal application process, which Digicel evaluated against specific criteria. This reflects a shift from previous years where more funds were distributed to a greater number of communities, highlighting the company’s focus on effective use of financial support amid rising project costs.
Digicel Fiji’s CEO, Farid Mohammed, noted that this approach allows for equitable distribution of funds across different regions in Fiji. By breaking down the support into three regional categories—Central Eastern, Northern, and Western—Digicel emphasizes its commitment to serving all areas of the country. The choice of the amount donated, $16,000, aligns closely with the company’s milestone of 16 years in operation.
Joeli Vueti, advisor for the Mokani Youth Club, expressed that this initiative serves as a much-needed “early Christmas present” for the community, particularly highlighting the project’s focus on solar lights. These lights will benefit children who need to study at night and offer safety for women traveling to markets early in the morning.
Looking ahead, Digicel Fiji plans to monitor the usage of these grants to ensure they effectively meet the communities’ needs. This initiative not only celebrates the company’s anniversary but also reinforces its commitment to social responsibility and community development.
In summary, Digicel Fiji’s $16,000 grant distribution underscores the company’s dedication to supporting local development, benefiting communities in meaningful ways. This initiative not only marks a celebration of longevity but also a promising pathway towards addressing community needs in Fiji.
