In celebration of its 16th anniversary, Digicel Fiji has contributed $16,000 to support three community projects as part of their Birthday Initiative Program. The recipients include the Mokani Village Youth Club from Tailevu, the Karoko Village Youth Club from Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama for Navosa-Nadroga from the western region.

This year, Digicel Fiji opted for a new approach to its community assistance program. Communities were required to submit proposals through an application process, which were then assessed according to specific criteria. Previously, the company had allocated over $50,000 to ten communities, providing each with $5,000; however, they recognized the increasing costs of project implementation and decided to provide a more significant amount this year, but shared among fewer recipients.

Farid Mohammed, the CEO of Digicel Fiji, explained that their initiative is intended to ensure equal support across all regions of Fiji, which is reflected in the distribution of grants to the Central Eastern, Northern, and Western Divisions. The choice to give $16,000 was particularly significant as it aligns with their 16th anniversary.

Joeli Vueti, an advisor at the Mokani Youth Club, expressed the community’s gratitude, referring to the funding as an early Christmas present. The project aims to address vital needs within the community, such as providing solar lights that allow children to study at night and ensuring that women can travel safely to markets in early morning hours.

To ensure the effective use of the grant, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the three selected villages regarding the progress and impact of their projects.

This initiative not only fosters development within these communities but also strengthens the bond between Digicel Fiji and the people it serves, demonstrating their commitment to social responsibility. The positive outcomes expected from these projects could lead to enhanced quality of life for residents and inspire further community engagement.

Summary: Digicel Fiji has announced a $16,000 grant to three community projects in celebration of its 16th anniversary. The funding, provided based on community proposals, aims to support local initiatives and meet critical needs within the villages. With plans for continual follow-up, Digicel Fiji is committed to ensuring the effective utilization of the funds, fostering community development and engagement.
