Digicel Fiji is commemorating its 16 years of operation with a generous grant of $16,000, allocated for three community projects as part of their 16th Birthday Initiative Program. The beneficiaries include the Mokani Village Youth Club from Tailevu, the Karoko Village Youth Club from Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama for Navosa-Nadroga in the western region.
This year, Digicel Fiji has implemented a new procedure for selecting community projects, requiring the communities to submit proposals for their initiatives. CEO Farid Mohammed explained that the decision to provide larger grants, in light of increasing project costs, is a shift from previous years, where they disbursed $50,000 to ten communities, each receiving $5,000.
The grants have been distributed with careful consideration for equitable support across different regions of the country—Central, Eastern, Northern, and Western. The significance of the $16,000 grant aligns with Digicel Fiji’s 16th anniversary celebration.
Joeli Vueti, advisor of the Mokani Youth Club, expressed gratitude for the support, describing it as an early Christmas present for the community. The project aims to address essential needs, including providing solar lights which will enhance children’s study time and aid women during early morning market trips.
To ensure the successful utilization of these funds, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the three villages after the grants have been allocated.
This initiative not only underscores Digicel Fiji’s commitment to community development but also fosters a spirit of collaboration and support among different regions, enhancing overall community welfare.
In summary, Digicel Fiji’s 16th Birthday Initiative Program exemplifies a thoughtful approach to giving back to the community while adapting to evolving project costs, ensuring that help reaches those in need effectively.
