Digicel Fiji is celebrating its 16th anniversary by contributing $16,000 to support community development projects across three villages. The initiative is part of their 16th Birthday Initiative Program and aims to empower local groups in improving their communities.

The beneficiaries of this year’s grant are the Mokani Village Youth Club in Tailevu, Karoko Village Youth Club from Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama for Navosa-Nadroga in the West. Each community had to participate in an application process to present their projects aimed at fostering development.

This year, Digicel decided to alter its approach to funding, moving away from a previous model that granted $5,000 to each of ten communities. Instead, they opted to provide larger amounts to fewer projects, reflecting the increasing costs associated with community initiatives. Digicel Fiji’s CEO, Farid Mohammed, explained that the decision to distribute the funds in this manner allows for better regional support and aligns with the company’s milestone celebration.

Joeli Vueti, an advisor for the Mokani Youth Club, expressed gratitude for the initiative, characterizing the support as an early Christmas gift. He emphasized the project’s significance in addressing vital needs, such as providing solar lights for children to study and ensuring safe travel for women to the market in the early morning hours.

To ensure effective use of the funds, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the supported villages regarding the applications of the grants.

This initiative not only marks a milestone for Digicel but also strengthens community ties and encourages sustainable development in these villages. By adapting their support strategies, Digicel Fiji demonstrates a commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the communities they serve.

In summary, Digicel Fiji’s $16,000 grant to three community projects reflects a positive evolution in their support approaches while fostering local development and empowerment.
