Digicel Fiji is celebrating its 16th anniversary by launching a special initiative that contributes $16,000 to support community projects in three villages. The funds were allocated to the Mokani Village Youth Club in Tailevu, the Karoko Village Youth Club in Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama for the Navosa-Nadroga region.
This year, the approach to funding was revamped, with communities required to submit project proposals under a new application process. This departure from previous years, where $50,000 was distributed equally among ten communities, reflects the rising costs associated with project implementation. As noted by Farid Mohammed, CEO of Digicel Fiji, the initiative is designed to ensure equitable distribution of support across different regions, targeting the Central Eastern, Northern, and Western Divisions. The decision to allocate $16,000 directly ties into their milestone anniversary.
The initiative has been met with enthusiasm, particularly from community leaders like Joeli Vueti of the Mokani Youth Club, who remarked that the grant serves as a timely gift for the village. The funding aims to help address essential needs, such as providing solar lights for children to study at night and ensuring women have adequate lighting while traveling to markets during early morning hours.
To ensure responsible and effective usage of the funds, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the recipient villages to monitor the progress of the projects.
This generous act by Digicel Fiji underscores the company’s commitment to fostering community development and enhancing the quality of life in villages across the nation, creating a hopeful outlook for ongoing partnerships and support in the future.
