Digicel Fiji recently celebrated its 16th anniversary by launching a special initiative that involved donating $16,000 to support community projects in three villages. The recipients of this funding include the Mokani Village Youth Club in Tailevu, the Karoko Village Youth Club in Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama for Navosa-Nadroga in the west of the country.
This year, Digicel Fiji adopted a new approach by requiring communities to submit proposals for their projects, evaluating them against specific criteria. This method marks a shift from previous years when larger sums were distributed to multiple communities without the application process. According to Digicel Fiji CEO, Farid Mohammed, the decision to allocate funding in this selective manner was influenced by the increasing costs associated with project implementation. He explained that the initiative was designed to provide equal support across different regions, commemorating the company’s 16 years of service.
Advisor of the Mokani Youth Club, Joeli Vueti, highlighted that the project will significantly benefit their community, providing solar lights to enhance study conditions for children and improving safety for women traveling to markets early in the morning.
To ensure the grants are utilized effectively, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the villages on how the funds are being implemented, reinforcing their commitment to community development.
