Digicel Fiji recently marked its 16th anniversary by awarding $16,000 to three community projects as part of its Birthday Initiative Program. The recipients of this financial support include the Mokani Village Youth Club from Tailevu, the Karoko Village Youth Club from Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama from the West, each focusing on village development projects.

In a shift from previous years, where a larger amount was distributed to multiple communities, Digicel Fiji implemented a new application process this year. Communities were required to submit proposals that were evaluated based on specific criteria. Historically, the company has provided over $50,000 to ten communities in the past, with each receiving $5,000. However, recognizing the increasing costs associated with project implementation, Digicel opted to concentrate their resources more effectively this year.

According to Digicel Fiji’s CEO, Farid Mohammed, this year’s initiative was designed to support all regions equally with a specific emphasis on the Central Eastern, Northern, and Western Divisions. The division of the funds aligns with the company’s commitment to uplift local communities.

Joeli Vueti, an advisor for the Mokani Youth Club, expressed gratitude for the grant, referring to it as a timely gift that will aid in addressing essential community needs. The project will provide solar lights for children studying at night and will offer safer conditions for women traveling to markets in the early hours.

To ensure the funds are used effectively, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the recipients regarding the implementation of their projects.

Overall, this initiative not only highlights Digicel’s dedication to community development but also serves as a powerful reminder of the positive impact that corporate social responsibility can have in enhancing the quality of life in local areas. As these projects take shape, they have the potential to foster growth and create a brighter future for the communities involved.
