Digicel Fiji is celebrating its 16th anniversary by contributing $16,000 to three community projects through its 16th Birthday Initiative Program. The recipient communities include the Mokani Village Youth Club from Tailevu, the Karoko Village Youth Club from Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama for Navosa-Nadroga, all of which are working on development initiatives for their villages.

This year, Digicel Fiji has implemented a new approach for funding projects, requiring communities to submit applications detailing their proposals. According to the company’s CEO, Farid Mohammed, this method allows for a more structured assessment based on specific criteria. In the past, the company allocated over $50,000 to different communities, but to address the increasing costs of projects, the decision was made to provide larger amounts to fewer groups.

The initiative aims to evenly distribute support across the country’s three regions: the Central Eastern, Northern, and Western Divisions, ensuring that all areas benefit from the funding. The decision to award $16,000 in grants coincides with the company’s milestone anniversary.

Joeli Vueti, an advisor for the Mokani Youth Club, expressed gratitude for the funding, describing it as an early Christmas gift for the community. The financial support will enhance local facilities, particularly allowing children to study under solar lights at night, as well as assisting women who travel to markets during early mornings.

To ensure that the funds are utilized properly, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the recipient villages to monitor the progress and impact of the projects.

This initiative not only provides immediate assistance to these communities but also fosters development and growth, encouraging a positive outlook for the future.

In summary, Digicel Fiji’s 16th anniversary philanthropy reflects their commitment to social responsibility and community support, heralding a brighter future for the villages that benefit from this program.
