Digicel Fiji is marking its 16th anniversary by contributing $16,000 to three community development projects through their Birthday Initiative Program. The beneficiaries include the Mokani Village Youth Club from Tailevu, the Karoko Village Youth Club from Vanualevu, and the Soqosoqo Vaka-Marama for Navosa-Nadroga in the West.
This year, Digicel Fiji opted for a different approach by implementing an application process where communities submitted proposals that were evaluated based on specific criteria. This marks a shift from their previous method, where they distributed over $50,000 to ten communities, each receiving $5,000. Given the rising costs of project execution, the company decided to provide a more substantial contribution to support these initiatives effectively.
Farid Mohammed, the CEO of Digicel Fiji, stated that the initiative aims to ensure equal support across the Central Eastern, Northern, and Western Divisions of the country. The $16,000 amount is symbolic of their 16 years in operation, reinforcing their commitment to community support.
Joeli Vueti, the advisor of the Mokani Youth Club, expressed gratitude, stating that this project will cater to essential needs within their community. The grant will facilitate the use of solar lights, enabling children to study later at night and assisting women who venture to markets in early hours.
To promote accountability, Digicel Fiji plans to follow up with the three villages to monitor how the funds are utilized, ensuring that the initiative brings real benefits to the communities.
This commendable effort demonstrates how corporations can play a pivotal role in community development, fostering a spirit of cooperation and hope for improved living conditions. By supporting vital projects, Digicel Fiji not only celebrates its anniversary but also invests in the future of the communities it serves.
