Sean “Diddy” Combs was acquitted on Wednesday of serious sex trafficking and racketeering charges that could have resulted in a life sentence, but he was found guilty of lesser offenses related to prostitution. A jury unanimously convicted Combs on two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution; however, they cleared him of conspiring in racketeering and sex trafficking involving two former partners, Casandra “Cassie” Ventura and a woman identified only as Jane. Upon hearing the verdict, Combs knelt to pray and expressed gratitude to his supporters, stating, “I’m gonna be home soon,” to the cheers of his family and fans in the courtroom.
Prosecutors had portrayed Combs as using violence and intimidation over a span of two decades to manipulate his victims into participating in drug-fueled sexual performances, colloquially referred to as “Freak Offs.” They cited disturbing evidence, including over 1,000 bottles of lubricant found during searches of Combs’ residences, which they claimed he used in these activities.
