Diaspora’s Political Hurdles: A Call for Change

Despite living in Australia for over 50 years, Lois Tanumi’s heart remains in Fiji.

Her deep love for her homeland and desire to give back led her to join SODELPA in 2019.

She aspired to bring her knowledge and experience to Fiji’s political scene.

However, her ambitions were thwarted by a decree in the Constitution requiring residents to live in Fiji for three years and prohibiting dual citizens from standing for elections.

“I cannot stand for the election because I am a dual citizen. This decree is a significant barrier for diasporas who want to contribute to Fiji,” she said.

Ms. Tanumi believes Fiji needs the knowledge and support of its diaspora to address the brain drain and improve the country’s socio-economic conditions.

She passionately advocates for the removal of restrictions on dual citizenship, which she views as detrimental to Fiji’s development.

“Fiji needs people like me, diasporas, to come back and share our knowledge.”

She called on the Government to act swiftly to amend these policies.

“I live well in Australia, but my heart is always in Fiji. I have a great love affair with this country, and I only want to come back home and give back.”

Mrs. Tanumi hopes this will be amended and she will be able to stand in the 2026 election.
