Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, recently met with members of the Fijian community in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, recognizing their pivotal role in nurturing the relationship between the two nations. Kamikamica praised the diaspora for their significant contributions across various sectors, including business, education, and healthcare, identifying them as key players in fostering cooperation and friendship between Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

Kamikamica’s visit coincided with the commemoration of two significant milestones: 50 years of diplomatic relations between the countries and the enduring legacy of Fijian servicemen who allied with Papua New Guineans during World War II. He highlighted these anniversaries as not only a reflection of the historic bonds between the nations but also as an opportunity to strengthen cultural ties and enhance people-to-people interactions.

He emphasized that the Fijian diaspora has an increasing role in encouraging investment and economic opportunities, crucial for advancing the bilateral partnership. This comes in the backdrop of ongoing efforts to enhance economic cooperation, as demonstrated by previous visits and engagement activities aimed at expanding trade relations and mutual prosperity.

The significance of these interactions is further exemplified by similar dialogues and missions, where delegations from Fiji have traveled to Papua New Guinea to explore business opportunities and foster economic ties. Such initiatives align with the goals of the Fiji-PNG Business Council and other collaborative efforts to address trade imbalances, explore new avenues for cooperation, and ultimately strengthen the socio-economic fabric between the two nations.

Overall, these efforts reflect a hopeful commitment towards regional cooperation, with a shared vision for sustainable development and mutual growth. The engagement of the Fijian community in Papua New Guinea, acting as cultural and economic ambassadors, underscores the resilience and dedication to fostering a promising future for both countries.
