Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka convened a consultative meeting with the Savusavu business community on Friday to address ongoing concerns related to the Copra Shed Marina and Nawi Island foreshore lease developments. The gathering took place at the Savusavu Town Council chambers, where business representatives alongside key government officials discussed various pressing issues, including the controversial removal of moorings at the Copra Shed Marina and updates on the Nakama Geothermal Canal.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Rabuka underscored the significance of open and constructive dialogue for resolving public and economic issues. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet with stakeholders, stating, “This issue has been ongoing for some time now, and I am thankful to personally visit and hear from those involved. We support development. We are listening, and we will ensure that all voices are heard.”

Rabuka reiterated that any government decisions regarding these matters would be guided by legal considerations, environmental impacts, and the long-term benefits for the people of Savusavu and Vanua Levu. He recognized the efforts of government officials who provided detailed insights into the legal, environmental, and investment aspects of the projects, and he also valued the perspectives shared by business representatives.

This consultative meeting is just the beginning of further discussions, as government agencies are set to continue assessing the situation closely in collaboration with local stakeholders. The Prime Minister reaffirmed that all decisions will adhere to the rule of law and serve the public interest.

The dialogue reflects ongoing efforts by the Fijian government to foster communication and cooperation among various parties involved, aiming for sustainable development and equitable solutions. Similar past initiatives, like those to mediate disputes between tourism operators at Savusavu port, demonstrate a governmental commitment to addressing conflicts through negotiation and transparency, suggesting a hopeful outlook for collaborative advancements in the region.

Continued engagement between the government and local businesses can nurture a constructive environment, essential for the ongoing development and enhancement of the Savusavu community.
