Diabetes Crisis: Are Our Teens at Risk?

Some teenagers, facing a lack of acceptance and support from their families, are struggling with suicidal thoughts, according to Marawa Kini, acting executive officer of Diabetes Fiji. A significant challenge the organization encounters is overcoming cultural beliefs, customs, and stigma that hinder young individuals from receiving the necessary support.

Mr. Kini emphasized that Diabetes Fiji is dedicated to collaborating with various stakeholders, including civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, government agencies, faith-based groups, and the media to tackle these pressing issues. He called on the Government to increase investments in public health programs managed by Diabetes Fiji and has sought assistance from regional and international organizations for their initiatives.

“If we do not address the challenges presented by diabetes, we risk a growing number of Fijians needing hospitalization,” warned Mr. Kini. Diabetes Fiji had submitted a proposal for inclusion in the 2024-25 National Budget, but unfortunately, did not receive any funding from the Government.

“As a charitable organization, we are eager to accept any form of support, whether in-kind or financial, from generous donors to further our mission,” Mr. Kini stated. He expressed gratitude to parents who are committed to caring for their children and highlighted that Diabetes Fiji offers programs aimed at supporting parents through training and advocacy.
