Graham Dewes, the forwards coach for the Flying Fijians, is set to join the Waikato Chiefs for the 2025 Shop and Save Super Rugby Pacific season. This move is seen as advantageous for the Chiefs, particularly following Fiji’s strong quarterfinal performance in the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

In addition to Dewes, the Chiefs will welcome Jono Gibbes, the head coach of the New Zealand Under 20s, who will serve as an assistant coach. Dewes comes with a wealth of experience, having previously represented Counties Manukau and Thames Valley and played 28 games for Fiji, contributing to the team that reached the quarterfinals of the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

Chiefs Chief Executive Simon Graafhuis expressed enthusiasm about the addition of Dewes and Gibbes, noting the valuable international coaching experience Dewes brings. Dewes himself expressed his honor at joining the Chiefs and his eagerness to work with top players and contribute to the team’s ongoing development.

Gibbes, who has been involved with the Chiefs in a Resource Coach role since 2024, is recognized for his respect among players and coaching staff, further enhancing the Chiefs’ coaching capabilities.

This coaching addition reflects a positive trajectory for the Chiefs as they look to strengthen their squad for upcoming competitions, showcasing their commitment to excellence in rugby.

In summary, Dewes and Gibbes joining the Chiefs positions the team for a promising season ahead, with their combined coaching experience expected to nurture player development and enhance overall team performance.
