The Viti Roofing Devo Baba’s rugby team is preparing for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s, scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. As they finalize preparations this week, the players are eager to face off against top teams from the region.
Head coach Bill Ratute expressed confidence in his team’s readiness. This will mark their second participation in the Coral Coast 7s, which they described as a significant step up from previous local tournaments due to the high level of competition and the vibrant atmosphere that accompanies the event.
“We are excited about what lies ahead,” Ratute stated. “This tournament provides an invaluable platform for our players to showcase their skills and talent against both local and international teams.”
This year, a total of 44 teams will compete, including 16 national and local squads. Ratute highlighted the benefits of playing against prominent teams, including the national 7s team and the Fijian Drua, offering his players a chance to learn and grow through competition.
The Devo Baba’s are highly motivated to perform well over the three-day event. Ratute also took a moment to acknowledge the crucial support from sponsors who have backed the team throughout their journey.
Beyond competition, Ratute emphasized the team’s focus on learning and development, aiming to seize opportunities within the sport, especially on such a significant platform.
In addition to the Devo Baba’s, various other youth and grassroots teams are gearing up for the Coral Coast 7s. For instance, the Village Boys and Taikita Brothers are also looking to make their mark at the tournament, showcasing the depth of talent and ambition within Fiji’s rugby community. The competition not only fuels aspirations of victory but also fosters hope and inspires the next generation of rugby players in the country.
Ultimately, the upcoming Coral Coast 7s promises to be an exciting display of competitive spirit and a celebration of rugby, offering young athletes a chance to shine and encouraging a community-wide support system that is essential for their growth and success.
