The Viti Roofing Devo Babas rugby team is set to compete in the Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s tournament this weekend, following a commendable run at the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens. In that recent tournament, the Devo Babas stood out as one of the eight local teams in the men’s division and advanced to the quarter-finals, showcasing their competitive edge.
With the experience gained from the Coral Coast Sevens, the Devo Babas, hailing from the Bua district on Vanua Levu, are eager to make an impact at Labasa. The team’s goal remains steadfast: to clinch a tournament victory while providing a platform for players to advance their careers, which have historically included opportunities beyond rugby, including positions in the Fiji Police Force.
Team representative Eronu Seru remarked on the club’s mission to enhance the livelihoods of its players. He noted the diverse backgrounds of the athletes, who have journeyed from rural villages to competing on broader stages. Seru is optimistic about their chances, drawing confidence from their prior success at the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s and highlighting the solid team chemistry developed over time.
The Labasa 7s tournament promises to be a significant event, featuring 40 men’s teams, along with eight women’s teams and 16 youth squads, set to energize Subrail Park this weekend. The Devo Babas’ recent performance—where they crowned themselves champions at the Wairiki 7s only to fall short in the plate final at the Coral Coast—adds layers to their upcoming challenge. With no injuries reported from their last outing, the team is fully focused and prepared to showcase their skills as they aim to shine in Labasa.
This weekend’s tournament not only serves as a competitive platform but also nurtures community spirit and talent within Fiji’s vibrant rugby culture, promising an exciting showcase of sportsmanship and the potential for growth for many young athletes involved.
