In a tragic incident last Friday night, a family in Vunivau, Labasa, lost their home—built over 45 years and valued at $200,000—to a devastating fire. Prasheel Naicker, 27, reported that his father, grandmother, and uncle were at home during the incident, which occurred while he was out visiting relatives in Labasa Town.

The fire reportedly began in the family’s prayer room before rapidly spreading to the roof. Two passersby noticed the flames and alerted the family. Naicker expressed frustration with the delayed response from the National Fire Authority (NFA), stating that quicker action could have potentially salvaged some belongings. Despite his efforts—including multiple phone calls and a visit to the local fire station urging for a swift response—the NFA arrived too late to save any possessions.

This incident marks the second significant house fire in the Northern Division within two weeks, following another fire on New Year’s Day in Waiqele, Labasa. That fire resulted in the total loss of another family’s home and raised serious concern about fire safety and response capabilities in rural regions.

Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, Acting Divisional Police Commander North, confirmed ongoing investigations into both incidents. The repeated occurrences have ignited discussions surrounding the urgent need for enhanced fire safety measures and more effective emergency response protocols in rural communities.

In light of these tragic events, there is a collective hope that the resilience shown by the affected families and the support from their community can lead to significant improvements in fire safety infrastructure. Strengthening community vigilance and collaboration will be essential in preventing future tragedies and ensuring a safer living environment for all residents.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety awareness and preparedness, highlighting the shared responsibility within the community to protect one another during emergencies.
