In Tavualevu Village, Tavua, a severe downpour has led to flash flooding, forcing 47 families to seek refuge in evacuation centers. Titilia Raibe Tamailebo, 45, voiced her concerns as she and her family struggle with the aftermath of the floods, expressing sleepless nights due to worry over their damaged property and farms.
“Our farm is destroyed, all our mattresses are wet and have all drifted away,” Ms. Tamailebo lamented. She shared how her family began relocating essential items and relatives to the Tavua District School evacuation center on Friday morning.
Despite managing to save her washing machine and fridge, the lack of electricity has significantly impacted their situation, leaving them with just a few kitchen appliances. The family’s residence is situated in a low-lying area of the village, making them particularly vulnerable to the rising waters from the Nasivi River.
According to Emosi Vueti, the village headman, flash flooding is nothing new for the residents. He noted that Tavualevu Village has faced multiple flash floods this year due to heavy rainfall. The community has learned to navigate these emergencies, but Mr. Vueti highlighted a critical issue: the Nasivi River’s deterioration, which is becoming shallower from sediment accumulation from the Vatukoula River.
He is appealing for government assistance to excavate the riverbed, emphasizing that their numerous discussions with officials, including the Minister for Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, may go unheard if tangible action is not taken.
Ms. Tamailebo has also made a heartfelt request for help, particularly in acquiring new mattresses and other essentials lost in the flood.
This situation underscores the vulnerability of communities to natural disasters and highlights the importance of timely governmental intervention in mitigating such impacts. As families like the Tamailebos strive to rebuild their lives, their resilience shines through, and with proper support, there’s hope for recovery and improvement in their living conditions.
In summary, residents in Tavualevu Village face persistent flooding challenges, prompting urgent calls for government action and community support to address these pressing issues and enhance disaster preparedness for the future.
