A family is reeling from the destruction of their home following a fire that engulfed their flat on Nasoki Street in Lautoka around midday yesterday. The family, still in shock from the event, has chosen not to speak publicly about the incident.
Neighbors who witnessed the fire expressed both their concern for the affected family and relief that there were no injuries reported. The National Fire Authority (NFA) responded quickly, arriving on the scene and successfully preventing the flames from spreading to nearby properties.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane reported that firefighters were on-site at 12:03 PM and found a concrete and wooden structure made up of three flats fully ablaze. The fire crew quickly set up a water supply to combat the blaze and managed to control the fire with assistance from a nearby fire hydrant at Vitogo Parade. Firefighters remained on the scene until approximately 4 PM to address lingering hotspots.
The affected property belongs to a 70-year-old woman, with two of the three flats rented out to tenants. Sadly, the house has sustained total structural damage, and the estimated cost of the loss has yet to be determined.
