A fire early Saturday has caused extensive damage to the old Suva Maternity Unit located opposite the Colonial War Memorial Hospital mortuary in Suva. The incident, reported at approximately 4:24 AM, prompted a rapid response from the National Fire Authority (NFA). Fire crews from Suva, Nakasi, Lami, and Valelevu arrived quickly, but they found the building already almost entirely consumed by flames.

NFA Chief Executive Puamau Sowane confirmed that the structure, though unoccupied at the time, suffered nearly total destruction, with an estimated loss of about 98% of the building. The preliminary damage assessment stands at around $100,000.

Investigation efforts are currently underway to determine the fire’s origin and cause. “Every fire has a story and always leaves a trail of how it started and where it started,” Mr. Sowane stated, emphasizing the importance of thorough investigative work. The NFA is collaborating with the police forensic unit to gather evidence from the scene.

Firefighters worked diligently to contain the blaze, battling strong winds that exacerbated the fire’s spread, attributed to the building’s old wooden structure. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and nearby properties were safeguarded thanks to the hard work of the firefighting teams.

This fire echoes recent incidents in Fiji, where similar challenges have underscored the importance of fire safety and community preparedness. Increased vigilance and proactive measures can help mitigate the risks associated with potential fire hazards. Community members are urged to remain alert and practice fire safety to prevent future incidents, fostering a cooperative spirit even in challenging times.

As investigations continue, it is hopeful that these efforts will lead to more effective fire prevention strategies, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all residents in the region.
