The Fiji Media Association (FMA) has expressed serious concerns regarding the recent detention of citizen publisher Charlie Charters. Mr. Charters was apprehended at Nadi International Airport and subsequently taken into custody by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

In their statement, the FMA indicated that the circumstances surrounding Mr. Charters’ detention were reminiscent of troubling times in Fiji’s media landscape, times that the industry has worked diligently to move beyond. They underscored the importance of ensuring that any detention or arrest complies fully with legal standards, emphasizing the necessity for due process and transparent communication to maintain public confidence.

The association called upon the relevant authorities to clarify Mr. Charters’ current status, whether he is detained, arrested, charged, or released, as well as to specify the responsible agencies and outline the next procedural steps, including any upcoming court processes.

Additionally, the FMA raised alarms about the implications this arrest might have on freedom of expression, particularly noting Mr. Charters’ vocal criticism of FICAC and the Fiji Sports Council in his writings.

In a separate but related matter, the FMA highlighted a clarification from the Fiji Sports Council, which stated that there was no directive to prohibit media access. Reports had suggested that journalists were turned away from an event due to a miscommunication with security personnel, though security officers indicated that a ‘ban’ was directed by the CEO.

The FMA emphasized that facilities operated by the Fiji Sports Council serve as essential venues for both community and national sporting events, and it is crucial for journalists to cover these events. They argued that media coverage is beneficial not only for transparency but also for the recognition and sponsorship of national sports and emerging talents.

The association urged the Fiji Sports Council to ensure that media personnel are granted access and that security staff are adequately informed to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. The FMA has consistently advocated for media freedom and freedom of expression, and they voiced their commitment to combat any threats to these rights.

As they remain vigilant, the FMA is prepared to engage with all parties involved to protect media freedom, accountability, and the public’s right to access information.
