Destruction Plans for Massive Drug Seizure Underway

Spread the love

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has announced ongoing discussions regarding the procedures for destroying 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine currently held by the police. The significant drug seizure took place in January 2024, and last month, the High Court in Lautoka granted approval for their destruction.

Commissioner Fong Chew emphasized that plans are being formulated on how and where the destruction will occur. “Once we have the concurrence of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and endorsement from the court, we will be able to announce the timing and location of the event,” he stated.

The High Court in Lautoka has set a trial date for April 2025, declaring it unnecessary to transport such a large amount of drugs for exhibit purposes during the trial, which would require the 4.15 tonnes to be moved from Nasinu to Lautoka. The court has outlined strict guidelines for the destruction process, including the requirement to document it with video footage to be submitted to the court.

This careful and methodical approach taken by authorities reflects a strong commitment to combating drug trafficking and adhering to legal protocols. As the situation progresses, it highlights the strategic coordination between law enforcement and judicial branches in addressing drug-related offenses.
