Search efforts are set to resume today for a missing 5-year-old girl from Naituvatuvavatu village in Wainibuka, Tailevu. The young girl went missing after becoming caught in strong currents while crossing the Waisomi River with seven other children and her 32-year-old aunt. They were returning home after collecting edible lady fern, locally known as “ota.”
The Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO), Livai Driu, indicated that the search had to be suspended the previous day due to darkness and adverse weather conditions. Authorities are hopeful that the continuation of the search today will yield positive results.
ACPO Driu also took this opportunity to remind parents about the importance of closely supervising their children, especially during school breaks. He emphasized that spending quality time with children instead of attending gatherings can help ensure their safety.
While the circumstances are distressing, the community’s solidarity and the dedicated efforts of the search teams offer a glimmer of hope for the safe return of the missing child.
In summary, a search is ongoing for a young girl swept away by river currents, with authorities urging parental vigilance.
