Desperate Need for Safe Housing in Fiji

Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre coordinator Shamima Ali has reported a critical shortage of safe accommodation for survivors of violence in the northern regions of Fiji. The lack of available safe houses leaves many women without secure places to seek refuge. Ali emphasized the urgent need for more affordable housing options to provide long-term safety for these individuals.

Currently, the organization can only offer emergency lodging for a limited duration, typically just a few days, to those facing immediate danger. This emergency accommodation is not accessible to everyone, as it is primarily designated for individuals who approach the center directly and those referred by partner organizations.

When survivors cannot remain in the emergency shelter, the center collaborates with local communities to find temporary housing solutions. Ali stated that they rely on families willing to provide shelter, ensuring that placement only occurs when the survivors feel safe. Continued support includes covering expenses like groceries and bills while the survivors reside with host families, extending assistance until legal matters are resolved.

The situation highlights the pressing need for more comprehensive support systems for women facing violence, ensuring not only immediate safety but also long-term security.

Despite the challenges, the community’s willingness to assist these survivors showcases the resilience and compassion present within society. Advocating for more safe housing initiatives will be vital in addressing these critical needs moving forward.
