Efforts to remove derelict vessels from the nation’s ports are set to begin in January 2025. Sakiusa Bolaira, co-chair of South Sea Towage Ltd (SSTL), described the condition of the abandoned vessels in Suva harbor as “horrific.”

Bolaira stated that discussions are ongoing with the Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji concerning the removal process and associated costs. He believes that the memorandum of understanding between SSTL and the Pacific Marine Group marks the start of this important initiative.

He mentioned that additional agreements would be signed soon, providing a clearer framework for the project. Fiji Ports and MSAF will collaborate closely, with validation through a specialized diving team to assess and map the situation underwater.

The timeline for the project is taking shape, with a clear directive to commence on January 1, 2025. Bolaira emphasized the need to prioritize the removal of obstacles for large vessels when they arrive at the harbor. He expressed concern over the underwater footage, indicating significant issues below the surface of the scenic harbor, which could inhibit the access of larger ships.

The initiative will not be limited to Suva harbor; plans extend to other locations like Lautoka and Savusavu.
