Derelict Vessels Set for Major Cleanup in 2025

Efforts to remove abandoned vessels from ports across the country are set to commence in January 2025. Sakiusa Bolaira, co-chair of South Sea Towage Ltd (SSTL), described the condition of the derelict vessels in Suva harbour as “horrific.”

Ongoing discussions with Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji are focusing on the removal process and the project’s costs. Bolaira stated, “This memorandum of understanding between SSTL and Pacific Marine Group marks the beginning of our collaboration.” He also mentioned that additional agreements will soon be signed, providing a comprehensive outline of the project.

Collaboration with Fiji Ports and MSAF is crucial, as previous port work needs validation from SSTL’s diving crew, who will assess and map the underwater conditions.

Discussions about the project are currently active, with strict timelines established. Bolaira confirmed that the target start date for the removal operation is January 1, 2025, as outlined by local agencies.

The removal will prioritize clearing direct obstacles for large ships entering the ports, addressing the significant challenges presented by the submerged vessels. The underwater imagery highlights the severe impact of these derelict vessels on maritime operations, not only in Suva harbour but potentially in Lautoka, Savusavu, and other locations as well.
