The Health Ministry has issued a warning regarding an alarming increase in illicit dental practices being conducted outside licensed clinics. Dr. Jone Turagaluvu, the head of Oral Health, highlighted serious risks associated with untrained individuals applying dental gems without proper tools or safety measures.
Dr. Turagaluvu emphasized that these dental gems are foreign objects that can lead to various health issues, including infections, gum disease, and potentially permanent damage if improperly installed. He pointed out that bacteria could accumulate around these gems, resulting in cavities, severe gum deterioration, and even tooth loss. Concerns were also raised about the bonding materials used in these unofficial setups, as they may leak into soft tissue, causing swelling, bleeding, and long-term gum diseases.
Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa echoed these warnings, indicating that such procedures do not adhere to any recognized dental standards. He urged the public to report any encounters with unlawful practices to the Ministry of Health through hotline 157, allowing them to investigate and eliminate these dangerous activities.
In light of these warnings, consumers are strongly advised to avoid these unregulated treatments, which could spread infectious diseases, including serious conditions like HIV due to inadequate hygiene standards.
This issue connects with previous concerns raised by the Consumer Council of Fiji about unregulated dental procedures, where CEO Seema Shandil alerted the public to the dangers posed by untrained individuals performing similar practices for low costs, such as dental jewelry applications at market stalls. Shandil emphasized that unregulated practices can expose individuals to severe health risks and urged consumers to prioritize safety by seeking professional dental care.
While the rise of illegal dental practices is concerning, it presents an opportunity for public health initiatives aimed at educating consumers about safe dental care. With proactive enforcement, health officials can work towards a safer healthcare environment, promoting better awareness regarding the importance of seeking qualified professionals for dental services. This collective response indicates a hopeful trajectory towards improved dental health standards in the community.
