The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has officially announced a Dengue Fever outbreak in the Central Division following a surge in confirmed cases. Since January 1, 2025, there have been 1,090 reported cases up to March 23, which exceeds expected levels for the same timeframe last year. This rise comes in the wake of heavy rainfall and flooding that typically occur from November to April, conditions that favor mosquito breeding.
The most significant increases in case numbers have been noted in the subdivisions of Navua, Suva, and Rewa. Additionally, the Tailevu and Naitasiri subdivisions have seen a spike in hospital admissions related to Dengue Fever, particularly at the Korovou and Vunidawa hospitals. The Colonial War Memorial Hospital has also reported higher than anticipated patient numbers related to dengue.
As a response to the outbreak, the Ministry is rolling out its Dengue Outbreak Response Plan, which includes enhanced monitoring both at divisional and national levels. Health officials are ensuring that essential medications, such as IV fluids and pain relievers, are available in healthcare facilities to support those affected.
Interestingly, while the Central Division faces this challenge, the Western Division has reported a decline in dengue cases, with continued monitoring and supportive actions in place.
Dengue fever is transmitted by infected mosquitoes, typically presenting with flu-like symptoms that can escalate to severe forms if not managed promptly. Symptoms include high fever, nausea, joint pain, and in severe cases, bleeding. Early diagnosis and medical attention are vital in preventing complications.
Public health initiatives emphasize eliminating mosquito breeding grounds by disposing of standing water. The community’s participation is crucial during this period of heightened vigilance, aligning with past experiences indicating that proactive measures significantly contribute to controlling the spread of dengue.
