A student from Xavier College in Ba has tragically died from Dengue Fever, as confirmed by the Ministry of Health. This unfortunate news comes amidst rising concerns over a potential dengue outbreak in the region, where the Ministry also clarified that Dengue was not the cause of death for another student, whose case is now under investigation by the Fiji Police Force.
In light of these incidents, the Ministry expressed its condolences to the families of both students. As a countermeasure, the Ministry has initiated adult mosquito spraying on school grounds and implemented clean-up campaigns along with adult mosquito surveillance (AMS) in identified hotspot areas. This proactive approach aims to achieve comprehensive coverage of 70 percent for mosquito control efforts and 60 percent for disease investigation initiatives.
From January to March 23, Fiji has reported a total of 5,128 cases of Dengue Fever nationwide. The Western Division, which has seen a significant spike in cases, has become a focal point for health officials. Similar efforts in past outbreaks highlight the importance of community involvement and public health education to address the growing risk. Health authorities are emphasizing the need for everyone to maintain cleanliness around their homes and to eliminate any potential mosquito breeding sites.
