Lautoka, Nadi, and Sigatoka have emerged as significant dengue fever hotspots within Fiji’s Western Division, as confirmed by Commissioner Western Apolosi Lewaqai. These regions have experienced a notable concentration of dengue cases, prompting public health teams to concentrate their efforts there.

“We are prioritizing these three areas and expanding our focus to other regions to curb the outbreak’s spread,” Mr. Lewaqai stated. In response to the rising case numbers, with a total of 253 recorded instances in the Western Division, coordinated cleanup campaigns have been initiated. These efforts are led by district officers and provincial administrators to tackle breeding sites for the mosquitoes that transmit the virus.

Last week, a successful cleanup was conducted in Nadroga, with plans for similar initiatives in the surrounding areas. The collaboration with the Ministry of Health is ongoing, with constant monitoring and support aimed at managing the situation effectively.

This response illustrates a proactive approach to public health, emphasizing community engagement and prompt action to minimize further outbreaks. Ensuring public awareness and involvement can significantly aid the containment efforts against dengue fever in these communities.
